Cedar hedge trees near Cornwall
Looking for cedars for a hedge? Eastern white cedar is the classic Eastern Ontario privacy hedge — dense, green year-round and perfectly happy in our heavy, damp soils. We grow and hand-select hedging stock on our farm in South Stormont, a short drive from Cornwall, Long Sault and Ingleside, and we can deliver and plant the whole row for you.
How many cedars do I need?
For a solid hedge, plant eastern white cedar about 60–90 cm (2–3 ft) apart in a single row. Closer spacing fills in faster; wider spacing is cheaper and fills in over a few more seasons.
| Length of hedge | At 2 ft spacing | At 3 ft spacing |
|---|---|---|
| 25 ft (7.5 m) | 13 trees | 9 trees |
| 50 ft (15 m) | 25 trees | 17 trees |
| 100 ft (30 m) | 50 trees | 34 trees |
| 200 ft (60 m) | 100 trees | 67 trees |

Why cedar for a hedge
- Native to SD&G — it grows wild in our swamps and fence lines
- Evergreen privacy and wind protection twelve months a year
- Handles wet ground and heavy clay where other evergreens struggle
- Trims neatly to any height, or grows naturally into a tall screen
Planting & care tips
- Plant in spring or fall; water deeply once a week through the first two summers
- Mulch the whole row 2–3 in. deep to hold moisture and keep weeds down
- Trim lightly once a year in early summer to keep it dense
- Deer browse cedar in winter — protect young hedges in deer country
Prefer a mixed hedge? Nannyberry and red-osier dogwood pair well with cedar for a natural hedgerow that feeds the birds. For taller farm windbreaks, see windbreak & privacy trees.
Cedar hedge questions
What size cedars should I buy for a hedge?
Most customers buy hedging stock in the 3–5 ft range — big enough to look like a hedge right away, small enough to establish quickly and stay affordable in quantity. Larger field-dug cedars are available if you want instant privacy. Ask for current sizes.
How fast does a cedar hedge grow?
Once established, eastern white cedar typically grows 30–60 cm (1–2 ft) a year in good conditions. A 3–4 ft hedge usually fills in within two to three seasons at 2–3 ft spacing.
Will you plant my cedar hedge?
Yes. Our small in-house crew delivers, plants, mulches and waters in hedges across South Stormont, Cornwall and nearby SD&G communities. See planting & install.
Do you sell cedars in bulk?
Yes — hedging is one of the main things we grow. Tell us the length of the row and we'll quote the quantity.
